Book Talk

One of the common interest between D and I are, we both love reading very much. We would like our daughter to enjoy reading too.

Almost every evening since J was born, D and I will take turns to read to her. Since I do not want J to pick up my very strong Malaysian accent (we called it Manglish), I only read to her in Mandarin. D has no choice... being only fluent in English, his job is to read English story books.

Because we both enjoy reading, we really LOVE choosing books for J. We try to choose a range of styles although we prefer books that are imaginative with good illustrations. We aim to avoid "reading books" (which she will get plenty of in school) in favour of story or poetry books, which can be just as effective in encouraging reading.

Here, I would like to share one of J's favorite (ours too) book with you. I managed to get D to share his point of view why is this book a good one to read with young children :)

Tanka Tanka Skunk by Steve Webb

According to D:

"This book is lots of fun and great for reading out loud together. J loves the different animals. It is super for developing reading skills because it encourages children to sound words out - very important for learning to read English. It also incorporates rhyme and rhythm which are similarly important. We read this together at bedtime but it's also lots of fun at more active times of the day because you can encourage your child to play a drum (bang a table, clap their hands, stamp their feet) to the beat of the story as well as act out some of the animal actions described."
